What Is the Cost to Replace Wood Trim With Vinyl Trim?

If you're a little strapped for cash and need to replace your wood trim, you can save money by opting for a vinyl alternative. Cut costs further by fitting your new trim yourself and borrowing the tools you need to do the job. Using vinyl will work out considerably cheaper than forking out for a replacement wooden trim.
  1. Comparative Cost

    • A vinyl trim will usually be much cheaper than a wooden finish. You can pick up a vinyl trim to seal the expansion gap between your floor and your walls for as little as a couple of dollars per linear yard. The price of the job will depend greatly on the type of trim you choose. Measure the area you need to cover with vinyl trim and then use a calculator to work out how much materials will cost you.

    Tools

    • You'll need to buy a set square, a miter box, a saw, a jigsaw and vinyl adhesive to fit your vinyl trim. It will save you money if you can borrow the tools from a friend or relative. If not, these items are available at a relatively reasonable price from your hardware store or online.

    Labor

    • Instead of paying a carpenter to install the trim, wait until the weekend and do the job yourself. Depending on where you live in the country and how much tradespeople charge in your area, you could save hundreds of dollars if the installation process is likely to take a day or more.

    Wear

    • Vinyl trim is less likely to dent than wood, but when it does get damaged, it will need to be replaced. It's possible to sand away most damage to wood trim and then resurface with a primer and a new coat of paint or varnish. If your vinyl siding cracks, the only option you'll have will be to replace it -- unless you're happy to live with the damage.
