How to Make a Garage Door Like a Barn Door

If you are redecorating the exterior of your home and wish to create a country or rustic theme, you can paint your garage doors to appear as if they are made of wood, like a barn gate. Instead of hiring a professional, you can create the barn door effect, using a few simple supplies from your hardware store. Preparing the garage door for the faux wood finish is just as important as using the correct technique when applying the paint and glaze to the garage door.

Instructions

    • 1

Power wash the garage door to clean it thoroughly, then allow it to dry completely.

    • 2

Cover the handles of the garage door with painter's tape to protect them from splatter.

    • 3

Sand the entire surface of the garage door thoroughly, using medium-grit sandpaper to remove old paint and prepare the surface for the primer.

    • 4

Apply a coat of primer to the garage door and let it dry completely. Lay drop cloths down on any surface below the garage door.

    • 5

Use paint rollers to apply a coat of brown paint to the primed garage door. Allow the paint to dry completely.

    • 6

Mix three parts paint glaze with one part of the paint you used on the garage door in a large bucket. Fill another large bucket with clean water.

    • 7

Put on rubber gloves for protection and dip a clean rag into the glaze mixture. Wipe the mixture over the garage door, one section at a time.

    • 8

Dip another clean rag into the water and wring out excess dripping. Wipe the wet rag over the recently glazed section of the garage door to create a textured, wood-grain effect.

    • 9

Continue wiping the glaze on the garage door and following it up with the wet rag to get the wood-grain effect over the entire surface of the garage door. Allow the door to dry completely and remove the painter's tape.
