How to Fix a Metal Breadbox

Metal bread boxes make an attractive and practical addition to a rustic-style kitchen. Available new from many home furnishing stores or used from antique stores, bread boxes provide a handy storage space for bread and other baked goods and help prolong the food's shelf life. Like any object with moving parts, your bread box may need occasional service to keep the rollers or hinges moving smoothly and silently. You can perform this maintenance whenever necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint over any scratches in the paint work of the bread box with the use of a small bottle of matching touch-up paint available from your local hardware store. If you own an antique bread box, at least some of the paint likely will be chipped. It helps to bring some color swatches home from the store to help match the color of the existing paint.

    • 2

Lubricate squeaking hinges or rollers with a touch of all-purpose oil. Apply a few drops to the affected area, and open and close the bread box a few times to work in the fluid. Wipe up any excess with a cloth. Squeaks usually begin to become audible when the moving parts have been left without lubrication for a long period.

Tighten the screws of the bread box as they work loose. The panels and some of the moving parts will feel loose or wobbly if the connections need to be tightened. If any screws are missing, take one of the remaining ones to your local hardware store and purchase a replacement.
