How to Continuously Feed Anthias

A large salt-water aquarium can take up an entire wall in the living or family room. A coral reef, complete with anemones, starfish and brightly colored anthias, provides a living focal point in the room. Yet the maintenance of a large reef aquarium is daunting. For example, anthias require frequent feedings -- a difficult task when you're at work every day. However, by adding a hanging refugium, the fish get the food they need in a constant stream throughout the day, whether you're at home or work.

Things You'll Need

  • Hanging refugium with pump
  • Sand
  • Live rock
  • Chaetomorpha or spaghetti algae
  • Amphipods
  • Brine or mysid shrimp
  • Copepods
  • Daphnia
  • Refugium light

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the refugium in fresh water. Check it for leaks before installing it onto the back of your aquarium. Empty the fresh water into the sink.

    • 2

Attach the power head outlet to the refugium's inlet, according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3

Hang the refugium on the back of the aquarium. Check to ensure that the power head and outlet are completely submerged.

    • 4

Adjust the screws on the side of the refugium until it is perfectly level and parallel with the aquarium wall.

    • 5

Pour 3 inches of sand into the bottom of the refugium. Spread the sand evenly in the base then add salt water to the same level as the water in the aquarium. Allow any sediment to settle before proceeding.

    • 6

Place several small pieces of live rock or coral and chaetomorpha or spaghetti algae in the refugium.

    • 7

Turn the refugium pump on. Adjust the pump so a slow stream of water filters through the refugium and back into the aquarium.

    • 8

Add zooplanktons, such as amphipods, brine or mysid shrimp, copepods or daphnia, to the refugium. The zooplanktons will flow into the aquarium through the outlet and provide a stream of nutritious food for the anthias and other fish.

Install a small refugium light over the refugium tank.
