Lay the foundation for your floor decor by placing an area rug in front of the fireplace. If you use your fireplace often, select a rug that's easily cleaned of soot or ash.
Flank the sides of the fireplace and area rug with a tall, waist-height end table on one side and a plant stand on the other side. Vary the heights of the two objects to add visual interest. Choose a plant stand that ties in to your decor. For instance, in a room with Grecian decor you can use a column-shaped plant stand with a flowing plant or the bust of a Greek god on top of it.
Place family photographs, a collection of knickknacks or a houseplant on the tall end table. Select decorative items that complement the decor you have on your fireplace mantel.
Position a firewood basket between the plant stand and the fireplace. Fill it with decorative logs, if you desire, such as birch.
Choose a fireplace screen that complements your decor and place it in front of the fireplace, between the fireplace and the area rug. In a room furnished with antique furniture, you can choose a wrought iron screen. A colorful tile screen can add to a Southwestern decor, or you can use a simple, brass fireplace screen.
