Hanging a Valance From Pegs

A draping scarf valance is one of the more graceful ways to add a topper to a window. Used with or without other drapery, the scarf valance is sometimes held in place with drapery pegs instead of curtain rods. In this type of window treatment, the pegs are visible. These decorative pegs provide anchors to loop the scarf valance across the span of the window.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the spots where you want your pegs placed. Just outside and above the corner of the window is a good place for the outer pegs. If your window is very wide, mark where you want to place additional pegs between the outer pegs. The pegs should be equidistant from each other.

    • 2

Install the pegs with the enclosed hardware according to the manufacturer's directions..

    • 3

Calculate the length of scarf you will need to cover the window opening, allowing enough length for the extra fabric needed for the drape between the pegs on either side of the window. Include the length you want the scarf to hang down from the pegs. The depth of the scarf valance varies according to the preferences of the owner.

Cut the fabric to the determined size with scissors. To hem around the edges of the scarf valance, turn the raw edges under one quarter of an inch and press them with an iron. Turn the hem up an inch, pin with sewing pins and stitch with a sewing machine. Remove the pins and press the hem flat with the iron.

Arrange the scarf across the pegs. Allow the material to drape between the pegs, then adjust the scarf until it falls the way you want.
