How to Bond Sculpey Onto Vinyl

Sculpey is a type of polymer sculpting compound used in the movie industry, by professional dollmakers and crafters alike. The compound provides users with a medium for creating detailed characteristics using fine tooling processes. Because the compound doesn't fill in as it cures, it is viewed as a reliable and effective sculpting medium for a variety of surfaces. You must effectively bond Sculpey to the vinyl surface for optimum results before you cure and paint it.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove dirt, debris and stains that might inhibit the bond between the vinyl surface and the Sculpey clay. Dampen a clean cloth with rubbing alcohol, which serves as an effective solvent.

    • 2

Wipe the vinyl surface with the damp cloth until it's clean. Dry the vinyl with another cloth.

    • 3

Sand the surface lightly with 120-grit sandpaper. Smooth out any blemishes in the vinyl and rough it up to create a surface more conducive to bonding.

    • 4

Dust the vinyl surface with a dry cloth to remove dust from sanding. Wipe the vinyl again with rubbing alcohol to ensure it's clean before drying it with another cloth.

    • 5

Apply the Sculpey compound as instructed by the manufacturer's directions.
