How to Convert a Sofa Frame to a Futon

Buying a new sleeper sofa brightens up a room, but is costly. Save money by converting your existing sleeper sofa frame into a futon. Futon mattresses are durable and constructed out of natural fibers, such as cotton or wool. Use a futon mattress to convert your sofa into environmentally friendly seating.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all cushions and pillows from the sleeper sofa and discard them. Remove any existing sofa cover if preferred and discard it. If the cushions on the back of the sofa are attached to the frame, cut along the seams where they are attached using a seam ripper. Discard the cushions once the seams have been cut, and fold under any raw edging that remains on the back of the sofa.

Measure the width and depth of the inside of the sofa frame using a measuring tape. Measure the height of the inside of the sofa from the base of the seat to the top of the sofa. Add together the depth and height measurements to find out the necessary futon mattress length needed.

    • 3

Select a futon mattress with the required length and width measurements.

    • 4

Cover the sleeper sofa frame with a new sleeper sofa cover if preferred. Place the futon mattress onto the sofa frame, and adjust the mattress so that the length is placed over the seating area and up the back of the sofa. You will have a fold in the futon mattress where the seat meets the back of the sofa.

Remove the futon mattress and open up the sleeper portion of the sofa. Place the futon mattress on top of the sofa bed frame for use as a fold-out bed.
