Showcasing a Vintage Oven

A vintage oven sets the tone for the entire kitchen. Its color and style may be the stuff "wows" are made of -- stylish and ahead of its time, decorated in bold red or turquoise with ceramic or stainless knobs, or a throwback to a time when cooking with gas or electricity was a true innovation. The oven serves as a decorative element and should look like it's in the room on purpose, rather than there as a bargain find or left-behind purchase.

Things You'll Need

  • Small vintage appliances matching the oven
  • Vintage canisters
  • Framed vintage advertisements

Instructions

    • 1

Stand across the room from the oven, looking at it from afar. Determine which aspects of the oven stand out most to you, such as its unusual color, the shape or makeup of the knobs, or the shape of the oven as a whole, calling to mind another era.

    • 2

Purchase decorative pieces reminding you of the elements you noted in Step 1; for instance, if the oven is bright red, find bright red canisters, coffee mugs or stackable mixing bowls in the same hue. A mixer the same color as the oven, or from the same era, works well as a decorative and functional piece for the kitchen.

    • 3

Display the canisters, mixing bowls, cups or vintage appliances prominently in the kitchen, such as on a countertop, atop the cabinets, or on a shelf. Ensure that at least some of the items are the same color or style as the oven, as placing them around the room adds cohesiveness to the space.

    • 4

Display framed advertisements from the era of the oven on the kitchen walls. These can be actual vintage ads or reproductions. Arrange them on a different wall than the oven itself to tie the space together, rather than making the room look like it has one retro wall.

    • 5

Add vintage tea towels or hand towels to the kitchen, displaying them in a basket, on the handle of the oven or refrigerator.
