DIY Twig Bouquet

Twigs, the delicate, thin offshoots of tree branches, make for an attractive and sometimes unexpected bouquet, whether housed in a vase or bundled together with decorative cording. Unlike flower arrangements, a spray of twigs can last indefinitely, and you can find the components in your backyard or purchase them from landscaping or craft stores or farmers’ markets.

Instructions

  1. Vase-Free Bouquet

    • 1

Gather a small handful of twigs that are mostly straight. Incorporate a few that fork at the ends or curve for a wider, sparser bouquet. Trim the ends of the twigs with gardening sheers so they’re all roughly the same length.

    • 2

Tie the twigs around the lower third of the arrangement with a silky ribbon for contrast, a few loops of natural twine for a rustic look or a thick blade of grass to create a completely natural twig bouquet.

    • 3

Place this bouquet next to a selection of perfumes on a vanity, atop a tray on your living room coffee table or next to a cluster of candles on a mantel.

    Classic Tabletop Bouquet

    • 4

Gather three to five short, small vases that are about half the height of the twigs. Fill each with small gravel, about one-third full. White, ceramic vases create a crisp contrast with the twigs, while metal canisters create a more rustic look. For a clean, Zen-like bouquet, opt for clear glass vases that allow the gravel to show through.

    • 5

Arrange the twigs inside each vase, pushing the ends into the gravel to secure them in place. Choose twigs with several other twigs growing off them, those that curve slightly or pieces that are otherwise visually interesting for a very natural, simple arrangement. Opt for very straight twigs, either just a few or as many as you can fit in the vase, for a denser look, or mix in flowering twigs for more color.

    • 6

Group the miniature bouquets along a dining table as a centerpiece or on a side table for an inexpensive, yet uncommon, decorative touch.

    Stunning Floor Arrangement

    • 7

Measure the bottom of short, wide floor pot and cut a piece of dry floral foam to this size. Push it into the pot and nestle it on the bottom.

    • 8

Gather very long twigs or thin branches. Choose twigs from the same type of tree for a uniform look, or mix twigs from two to three varieties to create a layered effect. For example, combine of birch, striped maple and standard dark brown twigs to create a subtle green, white and brown color scheme.

    • 9

Push one twig into the center of the dry floral foam. Work the other twigs around this piece until you have a full, slightly domed shape.

    • 10

Place in a corner of a bedroom, den or living room, near an entrance door or on a larger stair landing.
