How to Make Curtains Using Ring Hooks

Often a curtain is dependent on drapery hardware to define its look. When using ring hooks and flat fabric or curtain panels, it's all about the rings and how they shape a curtain with instant fullness and draping ability. For an easy project with endless possibilities, try working with readily available hardware and prefabricated flat panels to create functional curtains by using ring hooks at the top of the heading.

Instructions

Measure the window for final rod and curtain placement. This treatment can be mounted inside or outside of a window opening. Using ring hooks will lower the top of the curtain by a few inches, so allow clearance that equals the total length of the ring hooks to avoid light gaps at the top of the window. Read and follow the drapery rod clearance and installation instructions for specific guidelines that are applicable to the actual rod and ring sizes you are using.

Install the decorative drapery rod, using a cordless drill, according to manufacturer's directions. Using a tape measure, attach the ring hooks by clipping them to the top of a flat curtain panel with even spacing between the rings, making sure to have a ring on both ends of the panel. For lightweight or unlined curtains, space the ring hooks approximately 6 inches apart. For heavy or lined curtains, start with 8-inch spacing to allow for thicker folds.

Test the first clipped panel by inserting the rings through the installed rod. Verify the finished length and experiment with different ring spacing measurements until the desired fullness and spacing is achieved, keeping all clips evenly spaced across the top of the curtain. Match the spacing on the remaining panel and insert the rings through the rod.
