How to Hang Two Posters Side by Side

The hardest part of hanging framed posters or other pictures is getting the nails in the right place the first time. This is especially true when hanging pictures in a group. Solve this dilemma by making paper templates of your picture frames with the placement of the nail or hanging hardware correctly marked. Although you can use newspaper, wrapping paper or butcher paper for this, wax paper has several advantages. It is cheap, readily available and translucent, so you can see where to mark the nail locations. This method can be adapted for any number of pictures, from a single picture or pair, to a complete gallery wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Unroll and cut a length of wax paper that is equal to the tops of the frames, plus the desired distance between them, plus about three inches on either side of the arrangement.

    • 2

Lay the wax paper out on the floor, and place the yardstick on top of one long edge of the paper. Place the pictures on the wax paper with the top edges against the yardstick to ensure that they are even with one another. Make sure the pictures are the desired distance apart.

    • 3

Remove the yardstick and use the marking pen to trace the outline of the frames onto the wax paper. Trace the entire top edge, and about six inches down the sides of the frames.

    • 4

Flip the pictures so they are facing down. Slide the wax paper from underneath the pictures, and place it on top of the reversed frames. Align the frame edges with the marks on the wax paper. Use the yardstick to check your alignment. With the marking pen, mark the location of the nail or hanging hardware for each picture.

    • 5

Tape the wax paper to the wall where you want to hang the pictures. Make sure the marked top edges are at the desired hanging height, and use a level to ensure that the top edges are horizontal.

    • 6

Hammer the nails into the wall, through the wax paper, at the marks you made to show the nail locations. Remove the tape and tear the wax paper to remove it from the nails. Hang the pictures on the nails.
