Help With Small Hallways

Halls often are ignored, but even a small hallway can be infused with style and become useful space. Whether you prefer simplicity or your aim leans more toward the refined, there are many ways to transform this area into a more polished look that is tastefully imprinted with personal charm.
  1. Entrance Halls

    • Add beautiful light fixtures to hallway entrances.

An entry hallway has the job of first impressions. It welcomes guests and just as importantly, welcomes family members home. For a small entryway, choose a wall color that complements adjoining rooms. Make a big impact with a striking light fixture and vibrant patterned tiles, or speak softly with a neutral palette and stonework floor. To expand the appearance of the entryway, add an ornate mirror above a narrow sideboard table. Accent the table with a small bouquet or large floral arrangement.

    Architecturally Detailed

    • Use molding to create textured walls.

Add dimension and luxury to walls and the ceiling by attaching ornamental molding. Molding comes in many forms, such as rope work, beading and appliques of scrolling and floral designs. Creatively arrange your chosen style and adhere molding to the wall with paneling or wood glue. Do not nail small pieces of molding as they can split. Allow the glue dry overnight. Paint the wall and moldings in a color of your choice.

    Sophistication

    • Use a bold Persian rug to complement neutral tones.

Make a statement by dressing the hallway with elegant features, and daring prints and color. Consider a black-and-white checked floor paired with a small crystal chandelier and large-scale art, infused with vibrant shades of color. A painted or premade fresco mural adds old-world European charm. Faux painting kits are readily available and make it easy to create a glaze or Venetian plaster finish. For windows, opt for floor-to-ceiling billowing drapes for an uncomplicated, dramatic look.

    Utilitarian

    • A patterned floor can add a lot of character to small spaces.

Chalkboard paint makes a useful wall covering and is available in a wide range of colors. This provides a wellspring of inspiration and a helpful message center. On an opposite wall, arrange family talent by giving each child his own frame to showcase artwork. Let children change their drawings as they desire.

    Mix It Up

    • Pair striped wallpaper with floral prints.

Add character to a small hallway by combining a dominate pattern you love, mixed with two complementary patterns such as floral with stripes, and polka dots. For a quick and inexpensive project, staple fabric over a frame for instant wall decor. Or size a piece of board to fit a frame and staple fabric over the board, insert the board back into the frame, then attach a black or white wrought-iron hook to the center. Create a stunning display by adding a large array of mixed frames and patterns.

    Simplicity

    • Use a narrow bench to create seating and visual interest.

A small cubby bench works well to house coats, shoes and games. Add a note of warmth by hanging an heirloom quilt over a narrow antique bench. Accent wood planked floors with a braided rug. Recycle vintage doorknobs by attaching them to a slab of reclaimed wood for use as hooks.
