How to Decorate a Room With Damask Fabric

Damask fabric most often is used for upholstery, window draperies and table linens. The pattern can be used in contemporary, transitional and traditional homes, depending upon the color and texture of the fabric. Whether you want small-pattern damask for your grandmother’s dining room chairs or an oversize print for the windows in your master bedroom, decorating with damask gives your home a distinctive decor update.
  1. Living Room Backdrop

    • Damask fabric is beautiful when it is used for window treatments. Damask’s ornate pattern means even a simple rectangular panel looks luxurious framing out windows. Create your own art by framing damask fabric swatches in a mixture of ornate frames. Frame black-and-white fabric in hot-pink, purple or teal frames, and hang them over your sofa.

    Play With Color and Texture

    • When it is used to recover aging Queen Anne chairs, crushed-velvet damask in cream and gold gives a traditional living room an elegant update. Spread red and black damask fabric across a dining table for a dramatic tablecloth. Get a little funky by combining damask pillows in different colors on your sofa. When combined with a camel-colored sofa and a sisal rug, navy and white damask gives your space a transitional version of a nautical-inspired theme.

    Give Your Bed a Makeover

    • One of the best ways to decorate with damask fabric is to make it a focal point in your bedroom. Create a duvet cover for your bed. Even novice seamstresses can make a duvet cover your bedspread slips into, or you can score a premade version at your favorite home goods store. Add a splash of emerald green or royal blue to make your bed a chic place to rest.

    Interesting Patterns

    • Combine damask fabric with two other patterns. The key is to coordinate colors in all patterns. For example, to mix black-and-white damask chairs with other patterns, pick black-and-white vertical-striped wallpaper for an accent wall. Add a bit of color such as a yellow and white quatrefoil area rug. A damask sofa in tan and cream looks beautiful against a striped wall in butter yellow and antique white. Toss botanical-print pillows on the sofa to create an eclectic mix of patterns in a traditional room.
