How to Paint a Wall Brown & Another Cream

Brown and cream make an earthy combination of colors that is pleasing to the eye. Brown is easy to match with other colors, while cream is a warmed-up white, also complementary to most colors. Putting together this very flexible color scheme creates a homey and cozy interior. By painting one wall cream and the other wall brown, you reinforce the color scheme and add drama to the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a warm brown paint, meaning a paint that has overtones of orange, red or gold. Cream is a warm color itself, and combining two warm colors helps match them to each other and make the room feel more inviting.

    • 2

Purchase a few samples of different cream colors and different warm browns. Compare samples of the two colors by painting them side by side on one wall to see how they look together. Pick the combination that looks most natural in your room.

    • 3

Pick one color to be the dominant color in the room (painted on three walls), and the other to be an accent wall. If you're only painting two walls, skip this step.

    • 4

Paint the cream-colored wall first, if the walls are joined at a corner. Wait for the cream-colored paint to dry before painting the brown wall. Use painter's tape where the cream wall meets the brown wall to protect the edge of the freshly painted wall.

    • 5

Paint the brown wall, then remove the painter's tape when the paint is dry.

    • 6

Decorate the room in shades of brown and cream. Purchase natural wood furniture and give the room a little flair by incorporating an accent color like blue, copper or earthy green. By themselves, brown and cream are not necessarily the most interesting colors, so an accent color can prevent the room's decor from becoming predictable or boring.
