How to Search for a Tear in the Cloth on a Couch

It is common over time for tears to appear in cloth couches. Couches can be torn by pets or by normal wear and tear. The delicate fibers of the cloth can separate, and they can sometimes go undetected. If small tears are not noticed, they can eventually result in unsightly damage. To prevent costly repairs, it is best to detect small tears as soon as possible. This way you can make the necessary repairs without making a new purchase.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cushions from the couch and place them aside. Inspect the cloth on the inside of the couch as well as the outside. Slowly run your fingers over the fabric to help detect small tears that are not visible.

    • 2

Turn the couch so that the back is facing you. Look for signs of damage along the seams, the arms and the sides. Inspect the fabric for loose threads, especially near the seams of the couch.

    • 3

Place the cushions on a flat surface and closely examine the cloth for tears. Look for broken stitches and other signs of damage. Flip each cushion over and repeat the steps.
