How to Hide Grout

Grout serves an important purpose, but that does not necessarily make it attractive. Excessive amounts of grout can detract from the appearance of your fine tile and make your kitchen or bathroom less charming. Taking the time to hide that grout makes your tile look better and enhances the beauty of the installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Use tinted grout if you are doing a new installation. Tinted grout is available in a wide array of colors and styles, making it easy to match the look of your kitchen or bathroom and get the results you are seeking.

    • 2

Purchase a grout tinting product if the tile and the grout are already in place. You can buy these grout tinting products at many home improvement centers, flooring specialty stores and hardware outlets.

    • 3

Spray the tile and grout with a pre-treat cleaner before applying the grout tint. This cleans the grout and lightly etches it, allowing the tint to adhere more effectively.

    • 4

Use a paint brush to apply the grout tinting product to the existing grout. A small fine-tipped paint brush or old toothbrush works best to get into the smaller crevices and corners between the tiles.

    • 5

Wipe the excess grout tint off the tiles after it has dried for two hours. The grout tint is designed to stick to the grout but not to the tile. Applying grout tint will not weaken the grout or the tile, and once it is in place, you should not have to touch it up or reapply it.
