How to Modernize a Roll Top Desk

Roll top desks have a tendency to look somewhat traditional, as they were most commonly manufactured in the early to mid-1900s. However, you can make a roll top desk -- particularly those built during the Art Deco period -- look a bit less traditional through several fairly simple techniques. If the desk has great value, consider replacing it instead of altering it, or use a nondestructive method of making it look more modern.

Replace the legs on the desk with more contemporary legs made of chrome or polished or brushed steel. In most cases, roll top desks have legs that are screwed on in the bottom corners of the desks, and they can easily be replaced with a different style of leg.

Paint the desk a more contemporary color. Bright, vibrant colors like white, red and yellow can all add life to an old desk and make it look more contemporary. Pair the colors with other items you have in your room. If you have accessories that you want to use that have colors not found in other parts of your room, painting your desk one of these colors is an excellent way to incorporate them. If you are looking for more subdued colors, choose black or off-white, but avoid pastel colors which can make the roll top desk look dated.

Put decorative contemporary accessories on top of the desk such as a steel vase, candle holders or other decorative items. Stainless and brushed steel can work with a wide variety of different materials including wood, and can add a contemporary touch to traditional or more eclectic pieces of furniture and rooms. This works particularly well with transitional pieces of furniture that aren’t antiques or modern pieces.

Place a contemporary runner made of decorative silk or fabric over the desk when it is not in use. The runner should not be used like a blanket to cover the contents of the desk, but gently draped over the back. This will help the desk blend with your more contemporary décor when it is not being used. Avoid beaded runners or those printed with floral or wide stripe patterns.
