Hanging a Picture That Does Not Have a Hook on the Frame

Framed pictures add color and interest to a room, often pulling the decor together and making it look complete. Not all picture frames, particularly older wooden frames, come with a hanger on the back. Instead, a wire hanger stretches across the back of the entire frame to help the picture hang level. Proper installation of the wire prevents frame damage. Framing D-rings and wire are readily available at framing stores, hardware stores and some craft stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the side of the picture frame. Mark the frame with a pencil one-third down from the top. Repeat the measurement and marking on the other side of the picture frame.

    • 2

Set a framing D-ring over one pencil mark. Line the screw hole in the D-ring up with the pencil mark on the frame.

    • 3

Screw the D-ring to the picture frame, using the small screw that came with the ring. Attach a second D-ring to the other side of the frame, using the same method.

    • 4

Pass one end of a piece of picture wire through one D-ring. Fold the end of the wire over and twist it together to secure the wire.

    • 5

Stretch the wire across to the second D-ring and pass the end through. Leave the wire slack enough to sag 1 to 2 inches after hanging. Twist this end together to secure. Hang the picture by the wire.
