Design an upholstered headboard to hang behind your bed. Create a desirable shape for the headboard by cutting a piece of plywood to the size and design you want; for instance, a plain rectangle, a scalloped edge, an ornate edge or whatever else appeals to you and suits the existing decor of the bedroom. Add thick foam for the pillow effect and cover with your fabric of choice. Hang the headboard to the wall using brackets, or a 2-by-4 secured to the wall and alternately to the back of the headboard.
Another idea is to string a selection of pillows together to form a grid-like headboard. Whether you choose to use plain white pillows or decorative throws, options are available to suit any decor. One idea is to use two lengths of wood doweling to hang the pillows from. Determine where the pillows will hang and attach the dowels to the wall with decorative curtain brackets, one on top of another, leaving enough room for the pillows to hang. Sew ribbon to the corners of each pillow and tie the pillows to the dowels to complete the hanging pillow headboard.
Design a button-tufted pillow headboard and frame it with molding. Use a decadent fabric such as velvet for this type of headboard. Begin with a board, add a layer of foam and cotton batten and finally the fabric. Determine the pattern for the tufting and drill holes into the plywood or board to complete the tufting. Finish the look by framing the headboard with painted molding. Affix the hanging pillow headboard to the wall using a heavy gauge of traditional picture framing wire.
For a different look, design a bolster pillow hanging headboard. Bolster pillows are long cylindrical pillows that come in different lengths and sizes. Look for a series of bolsters the same length or sew your own. Stitch the pillows together to form a headboard and sew loops onto the back of the top pillow for easy hanging. Depending on the size and heft of the pillows, the resulting headboard should be relatively lightweight and can hang on small hooks. Experiment with different fabrics to vary the look.
