How to Re-Purpose Objects to Make Legs for Furniture

Instead of throwing away broken furniture and old, un-used objects, combine them to make something new. Re-purposing objects not only helps the environment, but also adds artistic flair to your home. Make legs from old chairs, claw foot bathtubs, and stair railings and add them to tables, sofas or bookshelves. Choose objects that reflect the furniture's use. Use books for a coffee table or reading table. Use old computer towers for a computer desk or large speakers for a table to hold your sound system. The process requires no drilling or hammering.

Instructions

  1. Books

    • 1

Measure the desired height for the table. Have someone hold up the tabletop to the desired height and someone else measure from the floor to the bottom of the table.

    • 2

Flip the tabletop upside down on the work surface.

    • 3

Place one book on the tabletop corner so that the spine points out from one side of the table. Line the book's edges up with the edges of the corner. Pile books on top of the first in the same direction until the books reach the desired table height. Repeat with the other three corners.

    • 4

Remove the piles of books, keeping them in order, and set them aside. Do not mix the piles of books. Keep them separated so you don't mess up the height of the table.

    • 5

Take the first book from one of the piles and spread carpenter's glue all over one cover of the book. Press the book glue side down on the corner of the table, lining up the edges, and so that the spine of the book faces out from one side of the table. Repeat with the rest of the books in the pile.

    • 6

Glue the other three piles of books to the remaining three corners of the table.

    • 7

Paint a thin coat of finish over every side of the pile of books. Let the finish dry according to the directions.

    Computer Towers or Speakers

    • 8

Determine the desired height for the table or desk. Using one speaker for each leg makes a low table, like a coffee table. Two towers piled on top of each other makes a medium height desk. Anything taller and the furniture is unstable.

    • 9

Flip the tabletop over so it is upside down on the work surface.

    • 10

Spread a thick layer of epoxy over the top of one of the towers or speakers. Flip the tower or speaker over so it is glue side down and line it up with one corner of the table and so the front of the tower or speaker faces out from one side of the table. Wipe away any excess glue with the paper towel.

    • 11

Repeat with the other three corners. Let them dry according to the directions on the epoxy.

    • 12

Glue a second tower or speaker to the top of the first, if desired. Repeat with the other three towers. Wipe away any excess glue with the paper towel and let the glue dry according to the directions.
