How to Make Tiny Apartments Seem Bigger

Small apartments may be cozy and homey, but they don’t provide a lot of space for your belongings. The key to making a small apartment feel bigger is maximizing your floor space. Every inch counts and even something seemingly small, like a couch sticking out from a wall, can limit your precious space. Effective use of the available space, lighting and furniture tricks the eye and helps open up a tiny space.

Instructions

    • 1

Place all furniture against a wall. Avoid pulling couches away from the wall or situating furniture in the middle of the floor. If an item is preventing you from placing furniture against a wall, place the item to the side of the furniture or on the furniture when possible. For example, if there's a surge protector sitting on the floor along the wall you want to place your end table against, place the surge protector on the bottom shelf of the table to free up the floor space.

    • 2

Opt for an end table instead of a coffee table. Coffee tables take up too much room in a small apartment. Pull the end table toward the couch so that there’s no room between the side of the couch and the table.

    • 3

Use bar stools as chairs when you eat. Stools are typically significantly smaller than chairs and can fit snug against a wall.

    • 4

Eat at a counter, if possible. Rather than placing a dinner table in your apartment, use the counter so that you’re not limiting your space even more. If your apartment doesn't have a counter, use a fold-up table so you can store the table once you’re finished eating. The fold-up table can also serve as a desk for your computer, if you use a laptop.

    • 5

Hang your TV on the wall. At the time of publication, most current TVs are flat screens that can be hung on a wall to save you a significant amount of space. Make sure to use a TV wall bracket. For maximum security, find a stud to fasten the bracket into.

    • 6

Store bathroom items, such as towels, washcloths, hairdryers and lotion, in preexisting cabinets or tall and thin storage spaces. Vertical storage spaces enable you to store several items without taking up a great deal of space.

Open the blinds when it's light out and add a tall, narrow lamp to the room. Apartment Therapy explains that a well-lit room feels bigger than a dark room. To make your room appear even lighter, paint your walls with a light, soft colored paint. Always avoid dark colors, as darkness shrinks the perceived size of the room. To complement the light colors, place mirrors in your apartment. Mirrors reflect light throughout the room and the reflections make the room feel larger.
