How to Divide a Room With a Board

Whether you're looking to divide a room into two separate areas or want to create privacy in a shared living space, delineate the room with a board divider. A board creates a sturdy, makeshift wall between a room, making one space appear to be two. With some basic tools and craft supplies, you can create an attractive and functional room divider from a board.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance from the ceiling to the floor and the distance between the walls. Purchase a wood board that's about 3-feet shorter than the distance between the walls and about 2 feet shorter than the distance between the floor and the ceiling. A piece of multiple density fiberboard (MDF) or plywood is well-suited for this project.

    • 2

Create a base for the board. Drill 2-by-4s to the bottom of the board in a vertical position. Drill 2-by-4s every 2 to 3 feet along the bottom of the board.

    • 3

Stand the board up on the 2-by-4s, which act as a support for the board, allowing it to stand securely.

    • 4

Decorate each of the sides of the board. Apply a solid coat of paint, paint designs, hang decals or apply wallpaper to either side of the board. Decorate the sides of the board so they coordinate with the decor of the room.

    • 5

Position the board between the walls where you want to divide the room. Push one side of the board up against a wall and leave a gap between the board and the opposite wall, allowing access between the two sides of the room.
