How to Decorate a Daybed with Side Bolsters

No matter the height or shape of daybed bolsters, you can add a flash of color and design that matches the décor of the bed comforter and the room. Daybeds can be an asset for small living quarters such as studio apartments, serving the dual purpose of a couch by day and bed by night. Arranging decorative pillows and throw blankets to cover bolsters creates the appearance of couch arms, which comes in handy when entertaining guests. The simple process of removing the accent pillows and throws transforms the couch into a bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose sheets and a decorative comforter set with matching sham covers and a bed skirt. Purchase two extra matching sham covers. Daybeds are typically twin-size mattresses, necessitating twin-size sheets and comforters.

    • 2

Remove the daybed mattress. Place the bed skirt on top of the box spring so that the decorative skirt falls to the ground in front of the daybed. Pull the skirt sides between the box spring and the bolsters.

    • 3

Place the mattress on top of the bed skirt and the box spring. Make the bed, leaving the excess material out to flow on top of the bed skirt. Another option is to tuck the excess material of the sheets and comforter tightly under the bed to mimic the appearance of a couch.

    • 4

Place pillows in the matching sham covers. Stand two shams against the back bolsters of the daybed or against a wall and one against each side bolster. This helps form the look of a couch, while adding a decorative touch that decreases the visibility of the bolsters.

Stack various shapes, colors, materials and sizes of accent pillows in front of the back and side shams to add depth and color to the daybed, further masking the bolsters. Fold a solid or patterned throw blanket in half horizontally and drape it horizontally over the back shams, drawing the eye to the middle of the daybed.
