How to Build a Rope Wine Rack

Excess bottles of wine must be stored in a dark, moist, cool room to preserve the cork and prevent degradation. If your wine storage room doesn’t have any shelving, you can make a simple rack with wood boards and sturdy sisal rope. A rope wine rack will hold up to three standard 12-inch-long wine bottles.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-by-2 lumber board, 14 feet
  • Handsaw
  • Sandpaper
  • Waterproofing wood sealer
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Drill
  • Sisal rope

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 1-by-2 board with a handsaw to make the wine rack’s sides, base and top. Cut four 10-inch-long pieces, four 1 ½-foot-long pieces and three 11-inch pieces.

    • 2

Sand the cut edges of the wood and spray them with waterproofing sealer to protect the wood in a damp wine storage location.

    • 3

Assemble the four 10-inch-long pieces together to make a square frame with the 1-inch side facing up. Secure the ends of the boards together using wood glue and two wood screws for each joint. This is the wine rack’s base.

    • 4

Place the four 1 ½-foot-long pieces vertically with the 1-inch side out so that each piece is perpendicular to and flush with the outside corners of the rack’s base. Secure the joints with wood glue and two wood screws for each joint.

    • 5

Place an 11-inch piece horizontally across two of the vertical pieces so it is flush with the top edges. Secure the horizontal piece in place with wood glue and screws to make the back of the rack. Place the remaining 11-inch pieces perpendicular to the back piece so they stretch across two pairs of vertical pieces. Attach these pieces in place with wood glue and screws.

    • 6

Drill lined-up holes into all four sides of the wine rack starting 5 inches up from the bottom, then drill two additional sets of holes at 5-inch increments.

    • 7

Thread 2 feet of sisal rope through one of the holes and through to the opposite hole so there are 3 inches of free rope on each side of the rack. Tie simple overhand knots to secure the rope in place. Repeat this process with each pair of holes.

Rest wine bottles across the parallel pairs of rope.
