How to Create a Bed Nook

The idea of a cozy bed nook in a corner where the rest of the world is shut out appeals to many people. The space provides a retreat from the business of the day and the troubles of life. Because the ways to create a bed nook are as varied as the types of houses and bedrooms that exist, you can pick a simple plan and adjust the project to suit your room. Decorate the bed with warm colors to promote a sense of comfort, and use soft lighting to illuminate the area.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an area to position a bed in a corner or end of a bedroom or attic. Try to use an area that has two walls and no doorways. Sometimes finished attics are perfect for creating a nook where the slope of the roof makes the ceiling too low for standing.

    • 2

Measure the width of the opening at the base of the bed that you would like to curtain off. Add extra space if you want an area to walk around the bed. If the nook is in a corner of the room, plan to curtain off the side of the bed as well.

    • 3

Design a curtain hanging system to match the walls. If you want a floor-to-ceiling covering, hang the curtain on all sides of the bed. Attach hooks to the ceiling to hold curtain rods or wooden dowels. Suspend the curtain rods or wooden dowels from the hooks to hold a sheer curtain or perhaps strings of beads.

    • 4

Slide the bed into the nook, positioning its headboard at the back of the nook. Install a few shelves over the headboard if no shelves are built into the bed. Either add a shaded light on the shelf at the headboard or use a hanging wall lamp.

    • 5

Position a few pictures to complement the nature of the person sleeping in the area. Keep them high enough to be out of the way of getting in and out of bed or making the bed. Add a few hooks toward the end of the bed to use for personal items such as hooded sweatshirts, sweaters or even a bathrobe.
