Design Ideas for Kitchen Backsplashes Using Glass Tiles

In many kitchens, the backsplash takes a beating. As the name would suggest, this space is often subject to attacks by splattering foods and liquids. One effective method of making this space look attractive while still protecting it for this onslaught is to install glass backsplash tiles. By filling this area with decorative glass tiling, you not only beautify it, but also make wiping up any spills or splatters much easier.
  1. Clear Glass Tiles

    • For a modern look, try clear glass tiles. Select tiles in translucent glass and affix them to your backsplash area using a clear gel epoxy in place of standard mortar. Because you will be able to see through these tiles, you should begin by painting the wall behind your backsplash, ensuring that the wall that shows through is an aesthetically pleasing one.

    Glass Tile Mosaic

    • Create an old-world feel with a glass tile mosaic. Use petite glass tiles to fill your backsplash area, creating a random arrangement or instead crafting a detailed pattern that replicates plants or animals. If you wish to make a pattern, carefully measure the space and sketch out your pattern on graph paper, coloring the squares to represent each tile so you can more easily place your tiles to craft your pattern. For a faster alternative to tile-by-tile placement, purchase a sheet of glass tiles already arranged into a pattern. With these ready-to-go sheets you need only to adhere them to the wall then grout around them.

    Checkerboard Tiles

    • Create a simple yet effective pattern by arranging two different colors of glass tiles in a checkboard arrangement. Select two colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel, such as blue and yellow, to ensure proper contrast. Arrange them on your wall in a checkerboard pattern, alternating between the two to create a modern and appealing display.

    Tiled Stripes

    • Particularly if you feature stripes in other places within your kitchen, using glass tiles to craft stripes in your backsplash area is appropriate. To create these stripes, purchase glass tiles in two different hues. Arrange them in rows creating horizontal or vertical stripes. If your kitchen is highly colorful, consider selecting more than two hues but instead, craft stripes of several different colors to fill your backsplash.
