How to Enclose a Patio With a Curtain

Too much sun and prying eyes can turn your outdoor patio into a space you avoid rather than a space you enjoy. Block the view of your patio and provide some shade for the space by enclosing it with curtains. In addition to being a functional addition, curtains can add visual interest to the space, making it even more appealing. With some basic tools and outdoor curtains, you can make your patio an outdoor retreat.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a posthole digger to dig holes about 3 feet deep at each corner of the patio and every 4 to 6 feet between each corner.

    • 2

Set a large stone in the bottom of each hole to allow for drainage. Combine standard cement mix with water according to the manufacturer's directions so the mix is not too wet and not too dry, similar to cake mix. Place two shovels of cement on the bottom of each hole on top of the stone.

    • 3

Set the posts on top of the cement and set a level on the side to check for plumbness. Lay a 2-by-4 piece of wood on the ground on either side of the post and press them up against the sides of the posts to create braces for supporting the posts. Hammer a nail in the end of each 2-by-4 into the ground to keep the braces sturdy. Keep the braces in place until the cement sets, which is about 24 hours.

    • 4

Create a mound of concrete at the base of each post to allow water to drain away.

    • 5

Purchase curtain rods that are equal to the distance between the posts.

    • 6

Screw the curtain rod brackets on either side of the posts, about 2 inches below the top of the posts. Place the brackets vertically on the wood: a hole on top and a hole on the bottom. Use a screwdriver or a drill to insert 4-inch metal screws through the bracket screw holes into the posts.

    • 7

Purchase outdoor curtains that are 7 feet long and the distance between the posts.

    • 8

Thread the curtains onto the curtain rods. Set the ends of the curtain rods into the curtain rod brackets.
