How to Make a British Punk Bedroom

There is some disagreement on whether punk originated in the U.S. or the U.K., but what can't be denied is the influence that many British punk bands had on the genre. Punk music was infused with anti-establishment lyrics sung over a hard-hitting, electric guitar lick. To embrace this music, you must embrace not only its edge but its style. This style can be translated into your dress and your bedroom decor. There are a few ingredients required to decorate a British punk inspired space.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang a British flag on the wall. This design element is key to creating a genuine British inspired look. The flag will likely be the focal point of the room, so hang it over your bed or a dresser. For more of a punk edge, hang the flag crooked.

    • 2

Hang posters or album covers of British punk bands such as the Sex Pistols, The Jets or Radiators From Space on the wall. You can frame each for a more sophisticated look or hang each with push pins. Feel free to hang items at an angle or overlapping each other for a more disheveled look.

    • 3

Place old electric guitars around the room or mount them on the wall. This is the most defining instrument in British punk.

    • 4

Make the bed with a dark, solid color comforter. Avoid patterns because they will compete with your wall decor. Instead, choose a bed cover that is solid black, dark blue or red. Close the open end of your pillow cases with safety pins to give the comforter set more edge.

    • 5

Paint the wall behind your bed with chalkboard paint. Chalkboard paint will turn your wall into a chalkboard. Write the lyrics to some of your favorite punk songs on the wall with chalk. Accent the lyrics with drawings of skulls, guns and other iconic symbols.

    • 6

Find or recover throw pillows with black leather fabric. Cut the buckle off a leather studded belt. Haphazardly, wrap a leather studded belt around a throw pillow and glue it in place with fabric glue.

    • 7

Create graffiti designs on an old dresser with spray paint. Spray the names of British punk bands or draw skulls on the dresser.

    • 8

Cover the handle of each drawer with belt studs. These studs are available at fabric stores. Glue these studs in place with metal glue.
