How to Apply Glaze to a Mirror Frame

Add a vintage feature to any room in your house with an antiqued mirror. Instead of searching through antique shops and possibly spending a great deal of money, create your own vintage mirror by transforming an inexpensive wood-framed mirror by applying glaze to the frame. With some basic supplies and a little time, you can give an ordinary mirror vintage charm, making it look like it was made centuries ago.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the mirror on a flat surface. Cover the surface of the mirror with paper, and secure it in place by running painter's tape along the edges of the mirror that butt up against the frame.

    • 2

Paint the mirror frame with a top coat of flat paint. Use a hand-held brush to apply the paint in smooth, even strokes. Allow the paint to completely dry; this will take about 24 hours.

    • 3

Put a thin coat of paste wax on the surface of the mirror frame with a clean cloth. Remove any excess wax with another clean cloth. Let the wax sit for about an hour, allowing it to dry and adhere to the surface of the mirror.

    • 4

Paint a coat of glaze onto the mirror frame. Use a hand-held paintbrush and apply the glaze in smooth, even strokes, following the same strokes you used to apply the top coat. Allow the glaze to dry for about 12 hours.

    • 5

Sand the surface of the mirror frame with a fine- to medium-grit sandpaper. Concentrate on the areas that you want to really give a distressed look to -- the corners of the frame, for example.

    • 6

Clean the surface of the frame with a clean, damp cloth to remove dirt and debris.
