      Determine where you want the bookcase to sit in the room. For example, you may want to place the bookcase directly in the center of the room or you may want it to divide the top quarter of the room.

      Take measurements for how tall and wide you want the bookcase to be, ideally. Place the base of a tape measure on the floor in the location you want the bookcase. Pull the tape measure up vertically to the desired height. Place the tape measure on the floor again and pull it out across the floor to determine how wide you want the bookcase to be. Mark down your measurements.
