How to Decorate an Angle-Shaped Bedroom

Angular spaces present more of a decorating challenge than the standard square or rectangular rooms. If your bedroom features harsh angles and shapes that differ greatly from the norm, you'll likely have to modify your decorating scheme to accommodate this uncommon setup. If you fail to do this, you won’t properly maximize your space and may make a petite bedroom appear even more minuscule.

Select a light hue if your room is small. Using a lighter hue instead of a bolder wall color will open up the space. Using a lighter hue also makes any odd angles in the room appear a bit less harsh, softening the space overall.

    • 2

Measure the space, and create a graph-paper scale representation of it. Use another sheet of graph paper to create scale cutouts of your furnishings. Move these paper models around your space before you start lifting and lugging your actual furnishings.

    • 3

Plan your placement of the largest furnishing items first. Because these will be the hardest items in your decor to fit into your space, figure out where you are going to place them, then fit your smaller pieces in around them. Place your bed and dresser first, for example, then arrange your more petite end tables and standing floor lamps where space allows.

Place your bed cater-cornered in the room if the room is large enough to accommodate this option. Placing your bed sticking out into the room is an easy way to soften the angles in the space and make the bed the most dominant feature.

Create a focal corner in the more open space in the room. If, for example, one part of your ceiling slants down, draw eyes away from this more closed-off portion of the room and toward the more open areas by placing your decorative elements away from this odd angle and near the open and airy wall on the opposite side of the space.
