Hanging Heavy Objects on Man-Made Stone

Man-made stone products often go by the name “veneer” or “cultured” and look almost identical to natural stone. They are much lighter than traditional stone and also lower in cost. If you want to hang heavy objects on man-made stone, such as a brick veneer wall, you must create pilot holes in it first. Then you use special masonry hangers, which are designed to grip the stone surface and to support the weight of heavy objects.

Instructions

    • 1

Weigh the object that you are hanging on the man-made stone by placing it onto a scale. Purchase concrete or masonry screws that are rated to support the weight of the object or greater. Concrete screws are available at hardware stores, home improvement stores and home centers.

    • 2

Look at the location where you want to hang the heavy object and choose the proper height for it. The height and position is entirely up to your personal preference.

    • 3

Locate a wall stud behind the stone surface using a stud finder. Slide the stud finder over the surface until it lights up and mark the area with a pencil.

    • 4

Read the package for the masonry screws that you purchased to determine the diameter. Insert a drill bit into a drill that is one size smaller in diameter than the anchor or screw. Typically you will use a 3/16- or 1/4-inch drill bit.

    • 5

Place the tip of the bit on the location of the pencil mark and squeeze the trigger to create a 1-inch-deep hole in the man-made stone.

    • 6

Insert the screw into the hole using a power drill until only a 1/4 inch remains exposed. Hold the heavy object up to the wall and hang the rear hook, ring or hanger over the concrete screw.
