If your room is frilly and feminine, ribbon tiebacks may prove the perfect option. Select ribbon to match your curtains, choosing a thick grow-grain ribbon for best results. Cut the ribbon into 18-inch strips. Turn under the edges of your ribbon, sewing them to give the pieces finished edges. Purchase petite plastic circles and stitch one into place on each end of the ribbon. Place two small nails in your wall on either side of the window, taking care to position them at the same height. For ease of use, select nails with large heads so the plastic rings do not slip off. To use these holdbacks, gather your curtain and wrap the ribbon around it, having the edges meet at the outer edge of the curtain, Hook the two round circles on your nail, positioning the ribbon edges so it covers the nail head.
Craft a shabby chic look by turning old doorknobs into curtain holdbacks. Purchase two new doorknobs, or locate classic doorknobs that are no longer in use. Screw one nob into each side of your window, placing them at the same height. Tuck your curtains back behind each knob, leaving the knob exposed.
For a crafty look, turn some of your favorite buttons into curtain holdbacks. Purchase some large buttons to use for this craft. Start by selecting two large screws and painting them to match your wall to make them less visible. Screw the screws into your wall, leaving them protruding by approximately three inches. Use hot glue to attach your large buttons to the tops of the screws.
Put a pair of attractive napkin holders to good use, turning them into custom holdbacks. Select two matching napkin holders and mount them onto your wall, positioning them so the mouth, which would usually face upward, is facing away from the window opening. Screw these holders to your wall and tuck your curtains into them for ease of use.
