How to Get Sparkles in a Popcorn Ceiling

A popcorn ceiling, with its distinctive, bumpy texture, is found in many homes. While some people opt to remove this in favor of a more modern look, keeping it intact lends a retro feel to your home. Some even add sparkles to create an added touch of boldness. To accomplish this, apply a new layer of paint on the ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the room for painting. Remove or cover any furniture with a dropcloth. Cover the flooring with plastic or dropcloth to protect it from any paint drips.

    • 2

Prepare the popcorn ceiling for painting, removing any dust or debris from the surface. Brush over the popcorn surface with a soft brush to get between any crevices.

    • 3

Apply a primer coat to the popcorn ceiling that is latex- or oil-based and not water based. Water-based primer can destroy the texture. Pour the primer into a paint tray and roll it over the surface of the popcorn ceiling. Once the ceiling is fully coated, allow it to dry overnight,.

Open a can of oil or latex ceiling paint in the color of choice. Add glitter in the color of choice to the paint, mixing it with a paint stick. Continue to add glitter until it reaches your desired level of sparkle.

Pour the glitter paint into a paint tray. Apply to the ceiling with a paint roller, going back and forth until evenly coated. The sparkle from the glitter will show up in the paint.
