Instructions

    • 1

Choose a mat for each picture you are framing. A mat helps the eye focus on the picture, rather than the frame, and will help tie together a grouping of pictures in mixed frames. Use a neutral color such as white for black and white pictures, or cream for colorful ones. For a single picture, a mat matching a focal color within the image will enhance the picture.

    • 2

Look for frames that complement the style of your picture. If you are hanging several frames in an arrangement, select a unifying feature such as color, style or shape for a pleasing display. Choose frames that are wood, metal, painted, plastic or fabric-covered, depending on your design aesthetic.

    • 3

Select frames that are suitable for the subject matter. Generally, simple frames are best for pictures with several subjects, such as a group portrait or scenic image. Use more decorative and ornate frames for individual portraits and simple scenes. When selecting sizes, consider the mat size and allow for wide borders around the picture.

    • 4

Assemble your mats, frames and pictures on a work surface along with your tools.

    • 5

Place the frame -- glass side down -- on a padded surface such as a folded towel, and remove the backing board. Use a screwdriver, if needed, to pry out the staples that hold it in the frame.

    • 6

Remove and clean the glass with a household glass cleaner and paper towel, and allow it to dry.

    • 7

Attach your hanging hardware to the back of the frame while the glass is out. Use a small tack hammer and nails, with a saw tooth hanger appropriate for the weight of your frame.

    • 8

Place the glass inside the frame.

    • 9

Position the picture inside the mat and secure with the acid-free tape. Place the mat, with the picture face down, on top of the glass.

    • 10

Reposition the backing board in the frame, and secure by carefully pressing the original staples flush with the back.
