Select, clean out and remove any labels from a glass jar. Examples of glass jars to use for this project include baby food jars, pasta sauce jars, jelly jars or any glass jar that has a lip around the top. If the jar doesn't have a label, wash it, then dry it completely with a dish towel. If the jar does have a label, soak it in a bowl of warm, soapy water for about 20 minutes. Remove the jar from the water, pull of the label and wipe of any glue that held the label onto the jar. Rinse the jar and completely dry it with a dish towel.
Embellish the jar to make it more visually appealing. Paint designs on the jar with glass paint. Attach faux gemstones or sequins to the jar with glue. Glue strands of decorative beads around the bottom of the jar and allow them to dangle off the jar.
Select a square or rectangular piece of plywood that is slightly larger than the jar. There should be at least 4 inches of wood extending past either side and the top and bottom of the jar when the jar is placed in the center of the wood. The piece of wood will act as the backing for your vase and will be placed flat against the wall, between the wall and the vase.
Paint one side of the plywood with color acrylic paint. Paint the wood a solid color, or paint designs on the wood. Allow the paint to dry for 12 to 24 hours.
Place the jar on the piece of wood. Make a pencil mark on the wood 1 inch out from either side of the bottom of the lip of the jar.
Remove the jar from the wood. Drill a hole through the wood over each of the pencil marks.
Wrap a piece of steel wire three times around the lip of the jar. Cut the steel wire with wire cutters so that there is length of 8 inches on either side of the jar.
Set the jar back on the piece of wood. Thread the wire on either side of the lip of the jar through the drilled holes in the wood. Wrap the pieces of wire together three or four times on the back of the wood. Clip off the excess wire and push the twisted wire flat against the back of the wood.
Cut a piece of decorative ribbon and glue it around the wire on the lip of jar to conceal the wire.
Make two pencil marks about 4 inches apart on the top of the front of the piece of wood; the pencil marks should be at least 1 inch below the top edge of the wood. Drill a hole through each of the pencil marks.
Thread a 12-inch length of steel wire through the holes at the top of the wood, making a 6- to 8-inch loop at the top of the wood. Twist the ends of each side of the steel on the back of the wood to prevent it from slipping through the holes. Cut off any excess wire beyond the knots.
Cut a piece of fabric that is equal to the back of the piece of wood. Glue the fabric onto the piece of wood. The fabric will protect the wall from the wire.
Hang the vase on the wall by the wire loop.
