DIY Bedding and Sofa Bed Cover

Spruce up a tired sleeper sofa with fresh fabrics for a new, updated look. Avoid slipcovers that come in only one size by making a custom-made slipcover. This design allows the slipcover to stay in place when the cushions come off and the bed is extended. Use the same fabric for bedding for a cohesive, fashionable look in the guest room.

Instructions

  1. Measuring the Sofa Bed

    • 1

Take measurements for the piece that will cover the back of the sofa bed. Measure from the inside where the back meets the seat, over the top to the bottom at the back of the sofa.

    • 2

Measure the arms. Measure each arm from the inside where the arm meets the seat, to the bottom of the sofa on the outside. Measure the length and width of the front of each arm.

    • 3

Measure the bottom part of the sofa. Depending on the sofa and the desired look, one piece to cover the front, lower portion of the sofa under the cushions may be enough. Measure all sides if you prefer the look of a sofa skirt, keeping the height of the skirt consistent.

    • 4

Measure each cushion, including the front back and sides. Each cushion will be fitted entirely in its own slipcover.

    Cutting and Sewing

    • 5

Cut one to two pieces of fabric to fit the back. If cutting two pieces for the back, cut one for the front and one for the back to ensure the best fit. Sew the pieces together. Ensure the seam is at the top of the back of the sofa. Open the sofa sleeper to see if the back and the ends of the slipcover can be connected together with Velcro enclosures or ties. If they cannot be connected, use Velcro to attach the slipcover at the bottom of the seat and the bottom of the back.

    • 6

Cut fabric for the arms. There will be two pieces of fabric for each arm. One piece covers the inside, from where the arm meets the seat to the bottom of the outside. The second piece covers the side of the arm that faces the front. Sew these pieces together. Include a detail at the seam, if desired. Add Velcro enclosures at the inside where the seat meets the arm and the outside-bottom.

    • 7

Cut fabric for the bottom of the sofa. If this is a skirt, cut it slightly longer than the measured length and hem it so it almost touches the floor.

    • 8

Fit the cushions with one piece of fabric. Allow room for overlap to accommodate a Velcro fastener. Sew in two side panels for a snug fit.

    The Duvet

    • 9

Create a matching duvet (comforter) with the same fabric you used for the slipcover.

    • 10

Cut two pieces of fabric slightly larger than the comforter.

    • 11

Turn the fabric inside out and sew three of the four sides together.

    • 12

Add buttons and buttonholes to one side, allowing access to the enclosed comforter. This makes the duvet washable and changeable.
