How to Make Ring Holes in Your Curtain

Making your own curtains is an economical way to dress your windows and bathroom shower. If you plan to hang curtains from rods using curtain rings, strategically placed holes in the curtain fabric are a necessity. Create holes that look neat and professional using a grommet kit. The nice thing about grommets is that they are durable and come in a variety of colors and sizes, so no matter what type of ring you use to hang the curtain, you are sure to find a perfect fit.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the curtain flat on a clean, stable surface. Measure the width of the curtain to determine spacing for the ring holes using a tape measure. Once you have the width measurement, determine the distance between each hole, dividing this number by the original measurement. For instance, if the width of the curtain is 72 inches, and you prefer 3-inch spacing between holes, divide 72 by three. In this case, plan for 24 holes, at a distance of 3 inches apart.

    • 2

Use a piece of chalk to mark the location for each hole. Now that you know how far apart to space the holes, figure out how far from the top of the curtain you want to place them. Once you decide on a distance, use the measuring tape to help you plot out each ring hole’s location. If placing ring holes 4 inches from the top of the curtain, place a chalk mark every 3 inches along the width of the curtain, with each chalk mark placed precisely 4 inches from the top.

    • 3

Slide the cutting block under the location of your first chalk mark. Place the grommet punch over the chalk line, dead center. Holding the grommet punch firmly, and give the top several taps with a hammer to form an indentation in the curtain’s fabric.

    • 4

Remove the grommet punch, and use the blade of a box cutter to cut an “x” directly in the center of the indentation. Poke the tip of a sharp pair of scissors through the “x” and cut out the circular indentation.

    • 5

Lay the curtain right-side facing down and slip the dome-shaped end of a grommet under the hole, dome-side facing up. Press down on the curtain to slide the hole over the dome-shaped end of the grommet. Slide the anvil under the grommet.

    • 6

Lay the other half of the grommet ring over the dome-shaped protrusion. Place the grommet-setting tool over the grommet ring. Hit the head of the setting tool with the hammer to form a tight union between the two grommet halves. Repeat the process for each ring hole.
