Use paint swatches to pick the perfect brown to match your oak. If you are starting with your oak bed, pick your brown to suit. Pick up an abundance of paint swatches in various hues and lay them against your bed frame. Look at the swatches in several different lights, giving yourself time to choose the perfect one. Seek a hue that has the same values as your bed, containing similar red or black undertones but that is a shade or two off from the bed to ensure that you don’t create an overly matched space. Dress either one wall in this hue, painting the rest white or cream, or paint all of your walls brown.
Select white accent furnishing to create contrast. Particularly if you don’t already have matching end tables or a dresser, choosing secondary pieces in a white hue is a smart choice. In doing so, you can avoid trying to perfectly match your pieces and lighten the space at the same time.
Dress the bed in light linens. Particularly if your oak is very dark, using a light linen, such as a white or cream bedspread, is a good idea. If you select a dark brown linen you run the risk of making the space overly dark and failing to create the necessary contrast.
Add in a pastel hue for additional contrast. Mixing brown with pastel pink, blue or lavender is popular in contemporary decor. If you would like an extra pop of color, select one of these light hues to add to your brown room, selecting throw pillows or other accents, such as lamps, in this pastel.
Hang a wall hanging with light hues above your bed. If the wall behind your bed is a brown one, hanging a painting or print with light whites or tones of the pastel you have selected to incorporate can lighten the wall and brighten the space.
Place eco-accents around the space. Because brown and oak already mesh to create a natural feel, adding some artificial or real plants or flowers to the space can play up this natural vibe.
