Wrap the support pole with fabric. This easy and inexpensive fix will soften the look of the pole, turning it into a decorative element in your basement. Select material in a color that coordinates with the rest of the space to camouflage the pole. Alternatively, make a bold statement by covering the pole with material in a color that contrasts with the rest of the space. Wrap the material around the pole, starting at the top and working down to the bottom. Secure the fabric to the pole with hot glue.
Cover the pole with a decorative wood casing. Purchase a prefabricated wood casing and slip it over the pole, or if you're good with wood working, create a casing yourself. The casing will transform an unattractive metal support pole into a decorative wooden column.
Make the pole a decorative mosaic. Cover the pole with tile adhesive. Select small tiles, use pieces of broken plates or decorative glass marbles and set them in the tile adhesive in a haphazard manner, transforming the pole into an eye-catching mosaic.
