DIY Rustic Fireplaces

A fireplace is a focal point in a room; adorning it to suit the design of the room will help set the tone for the rest of the space. If you want to create a country- or nature-inspired look into a room with a fireplace, accentuate this architectural element with rustic details. Use elements that will give the piece a natural, time-worn look to make it pop, thereby adding even more appeal to the fireplace.

Instructions

    • 1

Resurface the fireplace surround and hearth with natural materials. Pieces of slate or river rock will add a natural look to the fireplace and bring a touch of the outside in, which is a main focus of rustic design. Instead of removing the existing surround, simply cover it with mortar, and set the slate pieces or river rock in the material.

    • 2

Paint the fireplace surround. Paint, which can add a rustic, time-worn look, is an ideal alternative to resurfacing if you're strapped for time or don't want to commit to the permanence of resurfacing the surround. Choose a natural color, such as brown, sage or slate, and apply it to the surface of the surround. Once the paint dries, add to the rustic look by sanding over it with fine-grit sandpaper to give the paint a time-worn look. This application is suited for brick or wood-paneled fireplace surrounds.

Add a new mantle. A rustic fireplace should feature a mantle that has a natural look. Purchase a stone mantle and install in above the fireplace or cover your existing mantle with river rock or slate, using mortar to hold the materials in place. Another option is to replace the mantle with a large piece of wood. Repurpose a reclaimed wood beam into a mantle or use a mantle constructed from natural wood logs.

Dress up the fireplace with decorative accessories to complete the rustic transformation. Set clay vases and pot along the top of the mantle. Hang a picture of a wooded landscape above the mantle. Fill a wicker basket with firewood and place it on the hearth. Set out wrought iron fireplace tools on the hearth.
