How to Decorate a Utility Sink

Boring, plain utility sinks are just that – utilitarian. They're primarily used in laundry rooms and other areas where appearance doesn't matter. These sinks typically have a square shape and exposed pipes beneath. Materials range from thick plastic to enamel and the sinks usually have plain faucets and hardware. You can dress up your plain sink so it's more attractive with a length of fabric. Decorating the sink provides storage space beneath and makes it attractive enough to use in a bathroom or a mudroom entrance.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the front and two sides of the sink with a measuring tape.. Add 2 inches onto this number to determine the width of your fabric for a panel-style skirt.

    • 2

Measure from the floor to the top rim of the sink. Add 2 inches to this measurement to determine the length of the fabric.

    • 3

Cut the fabric to the length and width measurements determined.

    • 4

Fold the sides of the fabric in 1/2 inch. Fold over a second time, trapping the raw edge of fabric inside the fold. Sew a straight stitch up the middle of the folded layers to hold the hem in place. Fold and sew the bottom and top edge of the fabric using the same method.

    • 5

Pin the loop portion of the hook-and-loop tape to the top edge of the skirt, then sew it down.

    • 6

Stick the hook portion of self-adhesive hook-and-loop tape around the rim of the sink. Attach the skirt panel to the sink using the hook-and-loop tape.
