DIY Rod Holder for a Sliding Curtain

Sliding curtains allow you to open a room up to exterior light sources or close things up when you want privacy. Curtains are often made of heavy fabric. The weight and force exerted when sliding curtains open and shut require a stable rod that won't collapse under pressure. While there are many curtain rod mounts available at home improvement stores, you can create your own with a few basic hardware items.

Things You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • Pencil
  • Wall hooks

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height where you want to position the curtain rod. Mount the hooks approximately 3 inches wider than the window on each side and at least 1 inch higher than the window top. You can mount them higher to create a more dramatic effect in the room. Make sure your mounting hooks are large enough to accommodate the diameter of the rod. The rod needs to sit comfortably in the hook concave.

    • 2

Mark the location where the hooks will go. If the rod is 6 feet long, putting the hooks 3 inches from either end of the rod is one option. Hold the mount in place and place a pencil mark where each screw hole will be. Most mounts have between two and four screw holes.

    • 3

Drill the screw holes. If you are not screwing into a stud or solid piece of wood, make the holes large enough to accommodate plastic wall anchors that hold screws in dry wall.

    • 4

Replace the drill bit with the screw bit. Screw the hook mounts in place. Use the level to make sure the mounts are level.

    • 5

Put the curtain on the rod, and set the rod in place on the hooks.
