Natural Handmade Christmas Ornaments

Create natural homemade ornaments for Christmas including those for tree decorating, though ornaments do not have to go on trees to be enjoyed during the holiday season. Pick up items such as twigs, seed pods and fallen evergreen branches from your backyard or local park to make natural ornaments and use them on a natural-themed Christmas tree or combined with commercial ornaments.
  1. Twig Ornaments

    • Natural twig ornaments can be made into stars or wreaths depending on the size of the twigs. Create star ornaments by arranging twigs in a star shape and tying the pieces together with holiday-themed ribbon. Loop and tie a ribbon around the top of the ornament to hang it on the tree; larger star ornaments can also be made as stand alone Christmas decorations. Bend thin twigs together in a circle to form a wreath and use ribbon to keep the twigs together. Add some hot glue where needed for extra security if desired, and use hot glue to attach holiday-colored sequins and beads to the wreath. Dried red berries may be used in place of sequins and beads for a more natural look.

    Dried Fruit and Nut Ornaments

    • Use dried fruit and nuts as Christmas ornaments, such as dried apple, orange and pear slices, and walnut and Brazil nuts. Paint the ornaments or leave them as is; use glitter paints or glue as well as spray paints in holiday colors such as red, green, white and gold. Push pin ornament hangers through the tops of nuts and fruit for hanging them on your tree, though Brazil nuts may need to be displayed in holiday dishes if you cannot push the pin through.

    Evergreen Ornaments

    • Evergreen branches can be cut to about 4 and 5 inches for use as holiday ornaments. Bind the sparser ends of the branches together to create a splayed triangular formation; use craft wire to hold the branches together. Tie a decorative ribbon on top of the wire and use hot glue to attach holiday-themed beads and embellishments to the branches or dust them with glitter spray, though you can also leave them as is. Use another piece of craft wire as your ornament hanger to complete the project. You can also use this design to make large Christmas wreaths.

    Seed Pods

    • Assorted types of seed pods can be used as natural Christmas ornaments including moonflower and lotus seed pods. Depending on the type of seed pod, you may be able to carefully break it open and place tiny Christmas ornaments inside the pod as ornament options. Decorate the seed pods in assorted holiday colors or with glitter glue and attach plastic or wire hangers to the tops of the pods with hot glue for hanging purposes. You can also leave the pods paint-free, particularly if you are decorating an outdoor Christmas tree.
