How to Hide an Exposed Duct in the Attic

An open attic space is full of potential. If you choose to use it as extra living space, such as a guest room or movie room, a finished feel is important. While exposed ducts in the attic lend an industrial vibe, this look isn’t for everyone. Instead of spending top dollar to encase the ducts in a low ceiling, hide them with fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space from the top of the ceiling on one side of the exposed duct, down and around the duct, to the other side of the ceiling. Double this number to determine the width of the fabric you’ll need.

    • 2

Measure from one side of the exposed attic duct to the other to determine the length of fabric you’ll need for hiding.

    • 3

Cut a piece of fabric using your measurements for the dimensions. Use a thick fabric such as velvet or canvas to provide a distinctive texture as well as full coverage. Stick to a thin cotton fabric for a lightweight option.

    • 4

Hold the fabric piece up to the ceiling along one side of the exposed duct. Secure it to the ceiling with a staple gun. Pull the fabric piece over the exposed duct to the other side and secure into place to complete the hiding project.
