How to Make a Corner Curtain

Two windows that meet in the corner are lovely to look through but create a problem when you want to make curtains. It isn’t the curtains that cause the problem; they are constructed the same no matter what the wall angles. The crucial question is how to hang the curtains -- what type of rod to use. The rod dictates the width and style of the curtains. A knowledgeable home handyperson can create a rod for a corner curtain and then make the curtains to fit the rod.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase brackets that fit the chosen rod. Corner windows require one bracket at each outside edge, one in the center of each window if it is more than 30 inches wide, and one in the corner for each window. For a corner window setup of two windows, each 35 inches wide, six brackets are required.

    • 2

Hang the brackets. Hang one at each outside edge and one at the center of each window. The brackets that support the rod as it goes around the corner must be set back from the corner toward the center of the window by the same amount as the rod will protrude from the wall plus 1/2 inch. This is the return. If, for example, the front of the rod will be 4 inches from the wall, set each corner bracket 4 1/2 inches from the corner. When they are mounted to the wall at the corner, they will project out, from the wall and if they are not set far enough toward the middle of the window, the tips of the corner brackets will touch. Set them back far enough from the corner, toward the middle of the window, that they do not touch.

    • 3

Cut two pieces of rod. The length of the rod is measured from the outside edge of the end brackets, plus the amount required for the finial, to the outside edge of the corner bracket. Add 1/2 of the return.

    • 4

Insert the rod elbow into one end of the left-hand rod and one end of the right-hand rod. Fasten the finials to the remaining ends of the rod, and place the rod on the brackets.

    • 5

Measure the rod to determine the finished width of the curtains. Because there is a bracket in the center of each window, the curtains must draw open in the middle and stack at the corner and the outside edges of the windows.

    • 6

Use the measurement of the rod as the finished measurement of the curtains, and make them accordingly.
