While hot water heaters are generally known as one of the less attractive home necessities, tabletop versions are dispelling this idea. A far cry from the cylindrical shapes of traditional commercial heaters, tabletop water heaters are not unlike dryers in appearance and are much easier to decorate than cylindrical versions. Tabletop water heaters feature 2-inch layers of insulation and do not require specific coverings that cylindrical heaters require to avoid obstructing airflow to the heater's burner, among other issues. Using assorted coverings to decorate your tabletop water heater can also help lesson your electric bill, as it can reduce standby heat loss by 25 to 45 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

1
Use a cotton dryer cover to decorate your tabletop water heater. Cotton allows you to sew fabric embellishments on the cover in various patterns and designs, unlike plastic dryer covers, which require embellishments to be glued rather than sewn on. You may have to tailor the cover to fit the heater exactly depending on the heater's size.

2
Measure and cut pieces of flame-retardant scrap fabric that fit the sides and top of the hot water heater. Use the same type of fabric or a different fabric for each side; place small weights or painted stones on the top of the heater to keep the fabric on the heater, as glue might eventually melt and slide down the heater.

Place a decorative screen in front of your tabletop water heater. Paint a plain wooden screen in assorted colors and patterns, or purchase a carved, painted wooden screen.
