How to Fill Porch Slats

Your porch slats form both a structural and visual element of the exterior of your home, and if you have noticed that they have holes or gouges in them, it is time to fill them. Wooden slats with holes in them are prone to insect damage, rot, and over time, they can even break under too much pressure. Wood putty bonds to the wood and increases its strength while also giving the wood a fresh look.

Instructions

  1. Small Holes

    • 1

Scoop up a small amount of wood putty using your putty knife.

    • 2

Smear the wood putty into the hole on your porch slat. The wood putty should fill the hole completely.

    • 3

Scrape the flat end of the putty knife over the top of the hole several times from different directions.

    • 4

Allow the wood putty to cure. The label on the container indicates how long this will take.

    • 5

Sand the filled area using a 100-grit sanding block.

    Large Holes

    • 6

Clean any loose material out of the wood hole using your fingers

    • 7

Brush epoxy consolidant over the hole using a nylon brush. Many consolidants come in two parts and must be mixed together before they can be brushed on. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 8

Work the consolidant into the wood until the wood is thoroughly saturated. The wood will acquire a darker, wet look.

    • 9

Mix equal amounts of the two-part epoxy filler together on a scrap of wood.

    • 10

Fill the hole with epoxy filler using a putty knife, making sure that every crevice of the hole is filled, with it overflowing the hole.

    • 11

Scrape the overflow off using the putty knife. This allows you to flatten the epoxy filler to match the surface of the slat of wood.

    • 12

Allow the epoxy filler to cure completely. The amount of time this takes is listed on the epoxy filler’s packaging.

    • 13

Sand the cured epoxy lightly with a 100-grit sanding block to help it blend with the rest of the porch slat.
