How to Convert a Small Room to a Man Cave

Modern man no longer needs to fight the primal instinct to seek out his own cave. If you’ve got a spare room, stake out some space for your own private retreat and create a man cave. A man cave is a place a guy can go for solitude, to entertain friends or just to relax. It doesn’t have to be big; it just needs to be functional and comfortable, reflecting your taste and interests.

Instructions

    • 1

Define the main function of the room. Being a small room, there may not be space to house your every passion. Prioritize by activities you enjoy most. For some, the focal point is television, complete with cable, DVD player and video game consoles. Others prefer a dart board or poker table to host game nights. Other options include musical instruments, computers and electronic gadgets, books or work-out equipment.

Make practical structural changes. Install better task lighting fixtures, add plumbing for a wet bar, soundproof or re-wire the room. Change the flooring, if desired. Wall-to-wall carpet creates a plush, luxurious comfort lounge, while hardwood or tile flooring is a better if you anticipate a lot of physical activity.

    • 3

Paint the wall a color to create your preferred mood. A shade of deep brown, navy blue or hunter green creates a relaxing retreat. Red or orange generates an energetic atmosphere. If you have a favorite sports team, put their colors on the walls.

Cover windows with simple window treatments, such as sleek wood blinds, shutters, shades or basic panels. The window coverings should allow you to control the amount of light you let in and privacy you have, so avoid anything sheer, translucent or that does not fully close.

    • 5

Introduce furnishings based on the room’s priority purpose. If it’s audio/video equipment, get an entertainment center or wall unit that offers plenty of storage space. Alternately, bring in a bar, desk console or card table, whatever you need for your priority activity. Invest in quality, strong furniture.

    • 6

Add comfortable seating. A pair of lounge chairs or a leather sofa is ideal for kicking back and watching the big game. If you plan to use the computer or sit around a game table, get padded seats that support the back and neck. Look for chairs that swivel, tilt and have padded arm rests. Ensure you have enough seating to accommodate the number of guests you expect to entertain.

Include additional furnishings based on your available space and needs. Find pieces that are versatile, such as a shelving unit for your books, collections or trophies or an overhead cabinet for storage that doesn’t take up too much floor space. A mini-fridge packed with beers or soft drinks also makes a convenient end table. Get a coffee table or ottoman so you can prop up your feet or have somewhere to put your pizza and chips.

Decorate with accessories that reflect your passions. This is the one part of the house you don’t have to worry about making an impression on company or accommodating the family. One option is framed posters of your favorite movies, sports heroes or bands. If sports are your passion, frame your old jerseys and hang them, and put your trophies and medals on display. For music lovers, put musical instruments on display as part of the room’s decor.
